What is the RénoVert renovation tax credit program?

Created by the Quebec government in March 2016, the RénoVert tax credit is a refundable tax credit specifically designed for people who have eco-responsible renovation work performed on their primary residence by a qualified general construction contractor. This grant also encourages people to carry out renovation work that has a direct and positive impact on energy and the environment.

What renovation work is eligible for the RénoVert tax credit program?

Keep in mind that the RénoVert subsidy is mainly aimed at renovations that improve the energy efficiency of your house, apartment building or loft. Here is an overview of the renovation projects that are eligible for RénoVert financial assistance.

  • Insulation of roof, exterior walls, foundations and exposed floors;
  • Air and watertightness;
  • Door and window installation;
  • Installation or replacement of heating or ventilation systems;
  • Installation of stormwater or wastewater systems (except if the eligible dwelling is a cottage);
  • Installation of solar panels or a domestic wind turbine;
  • Development of a green roof.

How do I know if I qualify for the RenoVert subsidy?

Although the majority of residential buildings are eligible for the RénoVert program, we invite you to take a look at the eligibility requirements. At any time, you can contact Construction Précellence for more details. To be eligible, your home must meet the following conditions:

  • Be located in Quebec;
  • The construction must have been done before January 1, 2016;
  • Not be subject to a procedure that calls into question the right of ownership, such as an expropriation notice or a reserve for public purposes.
  • Your residence must correspond to the following type of dwelling:
    • Detached, semi-detached or row houses;
    • Manufactured home or a permanently installed mobile home;
    • Apartment in a condominium;
    • Dwelling in a multi-unit residential building;

The qualifying residence also includes the land, but no structures near your home, except for the garage, if it shares a wall with the house, or is connected by the roof.

If you own an intergenerational home, you may choose to treat each of the separate units as a single house that is your residence. In this case, each of the units is considered a qualifying home

A co-owner of a home has the option of sharing the tax credit with the other co-owners. However, the total amount claimed for that unit must not exceed $10 000.

What is the maximum amount allowed by the RénoVert tax credit program?

The maximum tax credit available is $10 000 per eligible dwelling. This amount is equal to 20% of the portion of eligible expenditures in excess of $2500 paid by the owner or co-owner after March 17, 2016 and before January 1, 2020.
